MM, G.V.R - 1250.SJT:L KAISER.6/BY:AUST.F.A. ( Recommended 10/10/1917 London Gazette 25/1/1918 )

WWII WM - V9271 L. KAISER
ASM - V9271 L. KAISER
The WWI medals Fine. The WWII medals GVF.
*Louis Kaiser was born in Port Melbourne, Australia, and raised by foster parents. In 1915 he travelled aboard HMAT Themistocles along with other troops bound for the battlefields of Europe.
Kaiser arrived at the Gallipoli Peninsula in November 1915 but shortly afterward, was to make the first of several visits to the hospital, this time with appendicitis (subsequent injuries were more military related, suffering persistent burns to the back and buttocks from the large artillery gun shells. ) and was transported to Egypt.
Arriving in France in early 1916, Kaiser was present at the Battle of Lagnicourt in early 1917 and is mentioned in the relevant chapter in CEW Bean's The Official History of Australia In The War of 1914-1918, shooting dead a German soldier who had thrown a bomb at his battery's position.
In the Autumn of 1917, Kaiser would find himself at the Western front; and it was his actions here that would lead to him being awarded the DCM and MM medals. Official recommendations and documents show that in October 1917, Kaiser and his compatriots were in action near Ypres and Westhoek. The recommendation states that "Corporal Louis Kaiser (then a Bombardier) was left in charge of the sub section, his NCO [Non Commissioned Officer] having been killed. By his coolness and courage this NCO inspired the remainder of the detachment (who had been badly shaken) and thus succeeded in keeping his gun in action at a time when it was most needed". "He assisted in digging out three men who had been buried in a dugout and carrying them to safety. He then carried a badly wounded officer to cover, returned to his gun to satisfy himself as to the safety of his men. Later under heavy fire, he assisted in extinguishing a fire in a gun pit which had been caused by enemy shelling".
