512.    Antarctic and WWI Medal Quartet Comprising a Silver Polar Medal with Antarctic 1910-1913 Terra Nova Expedition Bar, 1914-15 Star, War Medal and Victory Medal, to 176373 Chief Petty Officer Frederick Parsons, Royal Navy, being one of only sixty-five men to receive the Antarctic 1910-13 Bar he was presented the medal by King George. Also included are a large collection of second half XX Century photographs by H. F. Parsons and a novel stamped F.H. Parsons to inner cover.
*Frederick Parsons was born on 12th June 1878 in Bridport, Dorset and according to Naval records was a garden boy before joining the Royal Navy in June 1896 on his 18th birthday, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In 1909 he applied, with Admiralty approval, to join the ill fated British Antarctic Expedition under the command of Captain Scott and after written support from his commanding officer Captain Hall, was accepted to join the ships company. The Terra Nova set sail on the 10th June 1910 with sixty-five men aboard from eight thousand applicants, arriving in the Antarctic on 4th January 1911 and history was about to be written.
On returning home aboard Terra Nova, Fred continued his Royal Navy service throughout World War One, serving closely with submarines in the early days of submarine warfare. He appears to have left the service in March 1919 and ran a shoe repair business, living in a cottage called 'Terra Nova'. He died in 1970 aged 91, the last living survivor of the ill fated expedition. 8000-12000
