*Clarence William Antonie Potter, from Enfield Middlesex. was born in 1885 and enrolled in the Army 7th Hussars 1/1/1906 initially for 7 years in the Army and 5 years on reserve. Records indicate he trained as a Telegraphist/Electrician. He married a Sheffield girl Mary Emily from Attwood on 8th December 1913, a little time before being mobilized off Reserve on 5th August 1914. Having survived the war he returned to the Reserve in February 1919. Records further indicate he was living in Sheffield in 1964, aged 79. 80-150

269.    An Interesting Group of Medals Including Photographs, Cloth Badges all Relating to Colonel Frederick V. Harris - United States Army, medals include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (four Bronze Stars), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
Frederick Harris was born on July 12th, 1916 Palm Beach, Florida, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1934. Commissioned in the Reserve (Infantry) Christmas 1941 as a 1st Lieutenant on motor maintenance course No. 6, Fort Benning, Georgia. In September 1943 he joined 88th Infantry Division as a Division Staff Officer. February 16th 1945 Major Harris had been awarded the Bronze Start Medal for Meritorious Service in Combat, including taking orders to forward units under artillery and machine gun fire. In September 1963 he was posted to Vietnam with a rank of Colonel. It is believed that Colonel Harris retired in 1966 on reaching the age of 50, he died on April 28th 1999. A lot worthy of closer inspection. 60-100

*It is believed a 2nd row of medals covering his later career is missing. Records indicate John Lyne Vachell was born in 1892 in Newport, Monmouthshire, He went to school in Weston Super Mare, qualifying as a mining engineer. He took a commission in the army as a Territorial the Monmouthshire Royal Field Artillery, in August 1914, by the summer of 1916 he was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps and by March 1919 he was Acting Commanding Officer No. 53 Squadron.
He was gazetted for his Military Cross on 18th January 1918 - 'For Conspicuous Gallantry and Devotion to Duty. He did excellent work in many occasions locating and engaging enemy heavy batteries.
A Permanent Commission at the Rank of Captain, RAF followed on 1st August 1919 before serving in India from 1920 until 1923 in both front line and HQ roles. On is return to England, he rose through the ranks with various squadron and staff rolls until November 1937, at the Rank of Group Captain he was sent to Berlin as an Air Attache with specific brief of assessing the strength of the Luftwaffe and its production capabilities. In part this role ensured Vachell's inclusion in Hitler's 'Black Book' of the Most Wanted After he Invasion of England.
The outbreak of WWII saw Vachell take up two Senior Air Staff Officer rolls, including SASO Rear HQ Air Component of the BEF working alongside Lord Gort before returning to India in 1941 with the rank of Air Commodore, ill health forced John Vachell's retirement in 1943 and he died in RAF Hospital Halton on 11th July 1947. His brother Charles Theodore Vachell also received the Military Cross in WWI. 2000-4000
