A group of ten Matlock Town Football Club programmes dating from the 1940’s and early 1950’s sold for £290 (including buyers premium) at Sheffield Auction Gallery’s specialist Football Auction on September 15th. Dating from a time when Matlock played in the Central Alliance League the group included seven home programmes with matches against the likes of Parkhouse Colliery, Ilkeston and Long Eaton Town, however the two that appear to stand out are an FA Cup match against Port Sunlight and a game against Nottingham Forest ‘A’.
Robert Lea, Specialist Valuer and Auctioneer at Sheffield Auction Gallery, commented “Programmes from this period were often only made up of one or two pages and with relatively low crowds they can be hard to source and therefore carry a price premium”.
Like today, as well as team news, the programmes also carried adverts for local business including Edwin Hunt Fish and Poultry Merchants, Eldridges Outfitters, Shipman’s Jewellers and the Singing Kettle Snack Bar; and the cost of a programme back then……1 old penny!
